I had the pleasure of attending the Northern Virginia Urban League 22nd Annual Community Service and Scholarship Awards Dinner in McLean, VA last Friday evening. The theme of the event was “Empowering, Engaging, and Educating for the Future in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)”. As a coach trainer focused on empowering youth, I felt a strong connection to the work of the Urban League on behalf of African American youth and our community as a whole. The energy, confidence and pride in the smiling faces of the ten student scholarship recipients brought tears to my eyes. Each one stepped confidently on to the stage to accept their awards and were empowered to go after their goals and dreams in college and beyond. I have seen how mentoring and coaching in support of young people has a positive impact on the choices made in K-12 and in college and this event reinforced my belief in making coaching services available to all young people around the world. The Urban League is one shining example of organizations committed to supporting youth, in addition to their other great works. I encourage you to reach out to groups in your community to coach or mentor a young person. Watch what happens!
