I was browsing the NYTimes online this weekend and found an article entitled “Teaching Kids How to Break Up Nicely”. http://nytimes.com/2011/08/07/magazine/teaching-kids-how-to-break-up-nicely.html?_r=2&src=tp. I expected an article on how to approach another teenager, what to say, how to avoid confrontation, make eye contact, and more. What I soon realized is that this was an article on how to break up on Facebook (or not). Today’s youth are struggling with Facebook do’s and don’ts. It is easy to jump in, keyboard first, and post something hurtful or announce the world that you are breaking up with someone before you actually talk to them directly. I applaud the Boston Public Health Commission for including social media issues for teens in their “Healthy Breakups” conference. We need to do more of this for our teens and young adults in groups and individually.
